paint.net 4.2.13 is now available

This update adds some additional low-bit-depth choices to several file types (PNG, BMP, TIFF), and fixes some bugs.

If you’re using the Windows Store release, you should get the update automatically within the next 24 hours. You can also force an update check by following these instructions.

For the Classic release, you should be offered the update automatically within the next week or so. You can get the update sooner by going to ⚙ Settings → Updates → Check Now. You can also download and install it directly from the website.

Changes since 4.2.12:

  • New: Added 2-bit per pixel support when saving as PNG
  • New: Added 1-bit per pixel support when saving as PNG, BMP, and TIFF
  • Fixed low-bit-depth saving quality (8-bit, etc.), as it would sometimes produce very bad results (e.g. only using 64 colors instead of 256)
  • Fixed: Resizing an image at very large sizes (e.g. 32K pixels to 64K pixels) would fail due to an arithmetic overflow
  • Fixed: Sometimes recently saved images would not have an updated thumbnail in File Explorer unless/until its window was manually refreshed
  • Fixed: Sometimes saving an image to a network share would not work
  • Updated bundled DDSFileTypePlus plugin to version 1.10.4.0, which fixes an issue when loading and saving images using the sRGB color space. This issue was reported here: https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/116572-dds-file-format-bc1-bc7-srgb-export-incorrectly . Thanks @null54!

Enjoy!

Hello. I swear to God that my patience is running out. Please add support for right-to-left typing as well as text editing(by assigning a layer for each text).
And the possibility of changing the canvas by dragging the mouse pointer.
    Thanks

Hi, I have never replied to one of these in my life, but holy shit you sure are pumping out updates to Paint.net.

Can you please add an in-program fix for switching between alpha and release? I have a few programs that do this (i.e. Content Manager AC) and sometimes when I just want to make a quick visual edit I lose motivation after I boot and it forces an update.

    Hello, good job.
You could put the “LINE” tool just like Paint Tool Sai, it is very useful for drawings.
It would be a great option to create layered folders.
Congratulations, I really like the software …

Hi! Could you please remove using the color of secondary selected color for the 0 opacity replacement used when deleting selected areas? It makes using the magic wand tool for selecting 0 opacity areas very messy when I have different colors selected while deleting selected areas.

  7. nonnota says:

Correction: Deleting selected areas does not use the secondary selected color. Moving selected areas use secondary selected color. This results in 0 opacity areas leaving invisible “ghosts” that interfere with magic wand selection.

I actually have fixes for both of these issues checked into the 4.2.15 branch. I’ll look into cherry picking them for the 4.2.14 release.

The first issue is that the Move Selected Pixels tool should just fill with zero, instead of the secondary color w/ alpha set to zero. This is the result of an old, archaic, and frankly incorrect design decision.

The second issue is that the Magic Wand tool has a really weird algorithm for calculating the difference between color values. It’s just broken. I’ve updated it to use standard premultiplied alpha color space. This means that all colors with an alpha of 0 will be calculated as being “equal”, which is what you’d normally expect. If there’s demand for it I can also add an option in the toolbar to do calculations in “straight” alpha color space.

It does if you’re using the Microsoft Store version: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/paintnet/9nbhcs1lx4r0

If you already purchased the Store version, and are still getting update notifications within the app, then you still have the “classic” version installed. You can just uninstall it from the Windows control panel. If you accidentally uninstall the Store version, you can just re-install it from the Store.

I’m still waiting for anti-aliasing improvements, please we need some enhancements. Since Bicubic Quality was added to tools there was nothing else. A lot of my works has jagged edges without AA and the Bucket/Fill Tool really needs rework its working awfull right now!

I believe these smallish improvements would make the program way better. I’ve been using it for more than 5 years now.
