This small update fixes a few pressing bugs, particularly for touch and pen input.
If you’re using the Windows Store release, you should get the update automatically within the next 24 hours. You can also force an update check by following these instructions.
For the Classic release, you should be offered the update automatically within the next week or so. You can get the update sooner by going to ⚙ Settings → Updates → Check Now. You can also download and install it directly from the website.
Changes since 4.2.7:
- Fixed: Pinch-to-zoom was not working when using a touch screen (regression in 4.2.6)
- Fixed: Spacebar panning was not working when using a pen/stylus (regression in 4.2.6)
- Fixed: EXIF metadata with non-ASCII characters is now preserved correctly
- Fixed a crash that can happen when the Microsoft Store version of the app is closed for an update
- Added /repair command-line argument, which will run PdnRepair.exe. This makes it easy to use Start -> Run -> paintdotnet:/repair so you don’t have to go fishing for the installation directory.

I see its downloaded zip files in my updated 64-bit W7 HPE SP1’s %temp%. I was able to unzip it and upgrade from it manually.
I am getting the same error as ANT. I tried it several times. I run Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) SP1.
I have NOT checked in my temp files to see if it got downloaded. Your users should not have to do that.

Hi , i would like to use Paint.NET for pixel art but there is no “Thumbnail view” like mspaint.
I have zoom in and out all the time.Could someone add this feature?

Hi, there is some sort of a thumbnail view on the upper side of Paint.Net, in which the user can select the picture they are working on.
You might be able to just run PdnRepair.exe and reboot. This is probably the same root bug as one I was just fixing before (with the FileLoadException), where a file is not updated at update time because it’s locked, and then the “you need to reboot” requirement is not communicated to the user.
There’s no way for me to fix this for you — because I’d have to send you an update … which won’t work, as you can see.

Hi, this is great. One question though, will we ever see a noticeably large addition to paint.net such as perhaps a symmetry line?
I would like to know why I am getting an update almost every single time I open Paint.net? I’m going to start doing screen grabs each time an update pops up. It always looks like the same update.
While I’m bitching (sorry) could you please make the default ‘tool’ the Rectangle Select instead of the Paintbrush? I could have sworn it used to be the rectangle many moons ago.

There have been several updates to fix some critically high-priority bugs. You can look at the change log / release notes here on the blog to see what was fixed. I don’t really want to push out more than 1 update per month but sometimes it’s necessary so that crashes or other issues don’t affect a large population of users. Given the choice between some people getting “too many” updates, versus a lot of people having daily or hourly crashes (and data loss), I’ll choose the former.
Also, you can buy the Microsoft Store version of the app and updates will be completely transparent and in-the-background, you’ll just sometimes get a notification from Windows that it already happened. It’s actually a pretty nice benefit. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/paintnet/9nbhcs1lx4r0

The new update does not work with my system. I have opened it from the download folder and attempt an install as I always do, but with this version I only get an Install Failure message. I clear the download, then re-download it, attempt another install, but no matter – same issue. I have W7 Home Premium 64 SP1 with 8GB of ram.
