Paint.NET v3.20 Source Code now available

December 15, 2007 – 1:54 pm

I had actually prepared the source code ZIP file last night, but was exhausted and went to sleep instead of uploading it. Then I wake up and find out I was Slashdotted and all anyone can talk about is the Paint.NET source code and licensing :) Props to HostMySite for keeping the site up, I continue to be impressed with them.

Anyway, I just published the source code for 3.20. It’s available on the Paint.NET download page and is about 2MB. If you have questions please jump over to the developer section of the Paint.NET forum.

And remember, I didn’t close the source code! Goodness! I really wish people would read articles fully before jumping to conclusions! (Of course, that makes me a hypocrite since I have a terrible attention span for these things myself :)) I have only removed the source code for the installer, and placed the resource assets under a CreativeCommons-NonCommercial-NoDerivs license. Every type of exploitation that was possible in the past is still possible, and I’m fully aware of it, they just require a lot more work now. Licensing and release may change again if I change my mind or decide this isn’t worth the trouble or work, etc. etc. Part of this is for testing the waters to see its effect. </rant>

Anyway, enjoy :) I also plan on writing some actual documentation for the new IndirectUI stuff.

  2. I’m not a developer and wouldn’t know the first thing about looking at source code. But, thanks for this this awesome program, and sorry about the douche stealing your hard work.

    Thanks again

  3. Hi,

I have been using your software since the begining. It has been useful from time to time.

After reading your post I have realized that I have never really looked at installer code to see how it all works.

If you wouldn’t mind? I would be interesting in looking at the code; just to see how it all works.

Would that be possible? I have included my Web Site for you review with my current reseach. I don’t expect to use the code beyond just understanding how things work.

    Thanks,

    Will…

  4. Hi,

    I have a question/suggestion.

Why not mange getPaint.net thru CodePlex and actually get a community of codes to get involved in it rather then just managing source yourself?

  5. chirag, Why would I want to do that? I like writing code. I like being the only real developer on a project of this size. It’s a good, refreshing challenge and allows me to do whatever I want. You don’t outsource your passion.
